Gregor Craigie is a writer and journalist who has worked for more than 25 years at the BBC World Service, CBC News, CBS Radio, and Public Radio International. His curiosity led him to dozens of countries on five continents, honing his skill as a storyteller in feature pieces on a wide range of topics ranging from the identification of missing Bosnian Muslim men in mass graves to the giant seal hunt in southern Africa. He has been the host of On The Island on CBC Radio One in Victoria, BC since 2007, and in that role has interviewed thousands of people on hundreds of different topics.
His nonfiction books Our Crumbling Foundation: How We Solve Canada’s Housing Crisis and On Borrowed Time: North America’s Next Big Quake have both been finalists for the Writers’ Trust Balsillie Prize for Public Policy and named Globe and Mail Best Books. In 2025 he was awarded the George Ryga Award for Social Awareness. His first novel, Radio Jet Lag, was longlisted for the Leacock Medal for Canadian humour writing.
Craigie has taught digital news writing at Camosun College and has served as an internal trainer and mentor at CBC. This is his first teaching assignment at UVic.
