Indigenous news from UVic
Changing the narrative for Indigenous youth
UVic social work student Santanna Hernandez's path to university was full of twists and turns—much like the Columbia River cutting through her hometown of Trail, BC. Now a mother of four, Hernandez will graduate from UVic in 2019 and is currently applying to medical schools.
Building Reconciliation Forum
In November, UVic hosted the fourth National Building Reconciliation Forum in partnership with Universities Canada. The annual gathering serves as a way to explore how universities, governments and Indigenous communities can work together to answer the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action.Â
Artistic space
Indigenous Governance graduate Jarrett Martineau is a leading influencer within the Canadian media scene, having produced several high-profile projects in the last 15 years. His is a story of remarkable success for someone who has barely brushed his forties.
"Say you are Spanish"
Alumna Fern Perkins says her UVic education in the 1960s and 1970s saved her from a life of poverty and despair. Years later, she unlocked the secrets of her true Indigenous identity.
Building Reconciliation Forum
UVic is this year's host for the fourth annual Building Reconciliation Forum (Nov. 15-16), in partnership with Universities Canada. This year’s theme is Ts’its’u’ watul tseep, meaning to help one another. Free public events include an Indigenous artisans market on Nov. 16 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in First Peoples House.
Spirit Bear's Guide to Reconciliation
Cindy Blackstock will present "Spirit Bear's Guide to Reconciliation" at UVic's First Peoples House on Nov. 14. On Nov. 13, as part of Fall Convocation, UVic will acknowledge Blackstock for her many achievements, presenting her and Spirit Bear with honorary degrees.
Exploring ways of knowing
As a Métis woman, Brigitte Benning grew up in a tight-knit family with a strong maternal role model who taught her how to advocate for the rights and recognition of Indigenous people. Sociology caught her attention with its diversity of issues on gender, mental health, the environment, Indigenous methodologies, feminist studies and religion.
Finding self, reclaiming space
Corrina Sparrow wanted more out of her post-secondary education experience. While she was excited for the learning, she yearned for something she believed post-secondary education could help her develop: a historic understanding and a stronger sense of Indigenous identity. She found what she was looking for largely through UVic's School of Social Work.
Indigenous language revitalization
A new guide by UVic researcher Onowa McIvor invites everyone to embark on an Indigenous language learning journey. "The most powerful act of reconciliation that anybody could do in terms of Indigenous languages is to learn the Indigenous language of the land they are on," says McIvor.
Indigenous law program launched
In an emotional ceremony on Sept. 25 to launch the world’s first Indigenous law program, Elders, national and provincial leaders, scholars and others from the UVic community gathered in First Peoples House to welcome the first cohort of 26 students who have come from across Canada to attend the program.
Guide to Indigenous languages in Canada
On the 11th anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (Sept. 13, 2007), the Canadian Commission on UNESCO published this three-page quick-facts and tips guide to Indigenous languages in Canada.

Walking along the foothills of the northern Peruvian Amazon, 14 UVic environmental studies students—along with instructors Ana Maria Peredo and Kate Turner and mentors Murdith McLean and Frederique Apffel-Marglin—embarked on a unique learning experience this spring that wove together ecology, economy and spirituality in an Indigenous setting.
