Temporarily exit class
Disability- or chronic health- related functional impacts may be difficult for a student to manage within a lab or classroom. For example, a student with post-traumatic stress disorder may experience a panic attack, or a student with chronic back pain may need to take a walk to alleviate physical discomfort.
The temporarily exit class accommodation allows a student to leave the class for short periods of time to self-manage disability-related impacts. Students may go for a walk, use the washroom, get a drink or snack, remain in the hallway, take medication or find a private space.
Student responsibilities
Minimize class disruption when leaving and returning to the class. Consider sitting near an exit or aisle.
Collect missed content:
- from peers
- from instructor after class
Instructor responsibilities
Allow student to leave class without interruption. Contact the student if there are course-specific procedures for leaving the classroom or lab. For example, decontamination procedures.
How to help
Consider scheduling short breaks for everyone during class.
