June 06, 2025

The French Ambassador to Canada is at a clear podium in an ornately decorated room with French and Canadian flags. Catherine Caws stands behind and to the right, as well as three other award recipients.

On May 22 in Ottawa, Catherine Caws, a professor of French and Francophone Studies in the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures, was awarded the title of Chevalier in the Ordre des Palmes Académiques, a national order bestowed by the French Republic on distinguished academics and teachers and for valuable service to universities, education and science. She was recognized for her instrumental role in the development of the French accréditations exams center (DELF-DALF-TCF) at UVic. The award was presented by Michel Miraillet, the French ambassador to Canada.

Caws has taught French language and linguistics courses at UVic since 2002, with a specific focus on learning design and data-driven learning in digital contexts.
