Fan fiction

Research by Nia Rocca, a 4th year UVic sociology student

Fanfiction offers young women a unique platform to explore romantic ideals outside mainstream media. It allows them to craft and experience relationships through characters they relate to, often providing a more nuanced understanding than traditional media.

As young women mature, their engagement with fanfiction evolves. Initially drawn to fantastical and idealized relationships, they often shift towards narratives that reflect more realistic and mature relationship dynamics.

Fanfiction communities provide a safe space for young women to express their interests without judgment. These online communities foster a sense of belonging and validation, allowing readers to connect over shared experiences and narratives.

Through fanfiction, young women can set higher standards for real- life relationships. The stories they engage with often emphasize mutual respect and emotional connection, reinforcing self-worth and relationship expectations.
