Progress towards a zero-waste campus
At UVic, our commitment to becoming a leader in climate solutions and sustainability is outlined in the Climate and Sustainability Action Plan 2030. A crucial strategy within this plan is our dedication to providing services, infrastructure, and engagement opportunities that propel us toward achieving a zero-waste campus.
Single-Use Reduction Strategy:
- Launching Fall 2024/Winter 2025In our pursuit of a zero-waste campus, the Office of Campus Planning and Sustainability is actively developing a comprehensive single-use reduction strategy to be completed in Fall 2024/Winter 2025.
Initiating Change:
- Spring 2024Starting in Spring 2024, a collaborative working group will be established. This group, consisting of representatives from the Vice President's Office of Finances, Purchasing Services, University Food Services, Waste Reduction Services, Residence Services, Occupational Health and Safety, Faculty, and Student Groups, will identify predominant single-use items in our waste stream. Through procurement, management, and education, the group will strategize effective ways to reduce their presence on campus.
Strategic Focus Areas:
- Data-Driven Approach:
- Develop standard methodologies for data collection, governance, and analysis using guidance from supplier contracts, service agreements, total spend reports, historical waste audits, scope 3 emissions baseline development, and l Version 3.0.
- Government Collaboration:
- Align with , , and and to identify opportunities for grant funding, procurement guidelines, waste management infrastructure, diversion opportunities, reduction targets, timelines, and regulatory compliance.
- Prioritization Through Data:
- Utilize data to categorize and prioritize prevalent single-use items and contaminants in the waste stream.
- Develop reduction targets and implement policies, programs, and pilot projects to reduce single-use packaging procurement, educate the community on waste diversion practices, and work with waste management for end-of-life management and potential diversion programs.
- Focused Operations:
- Develop strategies, resources, and pilot programs for key operations, including procurement and purchasing, food service, catering, retail and vending operations, events, and offices.
