macOS Tahoe released

September 15, 2025

Apple has released Tahoe (macOS 26), a new operating system for iMacs, MacBooks and Mac Pros.

Testing is underway to ensure Tahoe is compatible with the software and systems our community relies on. This includes UVic specific applications and services.

Until testing is complete, University Systems does not recommend upgrading to Tahoe.

If you already have Tahoe

Newly purchased Apple computers may come with Tahoe pre-installed. If you are not able to downgrade to the previous macOS 15 (Sequoia), we recommend installing any available updates.

Disable Optimized Storage

Tahoe's Optimized storage feature may transfer materials from your hard drive to iCloud.

  • Please disable Optimized Storage. iCloud is not suitable for storing university data. OneDrive, home.uvic.ca or UVic network shares are the preferred places to store data.

Software compatibility

If you're considering purchasing a new Apple computer or upgrading to Tahoe, please check if your software is compatible. We recommend using this  to help.

Most software used at UVic will likely have versions compatible with Tahoe eventually. Software vendors have offered different timelines for compatibility upgrades. Some will release updates quickly and others may take more time.

We'll be testing new versions of common software applications used at UVic as they're released. This list will be updated with new information.

Hardware compatibility

If you use external devices like docking stations, we recommend checking if they'll be fully supported in Tahoe. This is especially important for older devices that require drivers to be installed. Very old printers are unlikely to be compatible.
