Microsoft 365 Groups

Microsoft 365 (M365) Groups are attached to a Microsoft Team or SharePoint Online site. They’re a great free alternative for shared mailboxes. If you’re just interested in email lists, check out email distribution lists.

M365 Groups provide:

  • A @groups.uvic.ca email address. You can use the shared mailbox or set up email distribution.
  • A shared calendar
  • A SharePoint site, OneNote, and Planner for all group members
  • easy to manage user access through Teams or SharePoint. M365 Group membership automatically updates to match whatever you set in Teams or SharePoint.

Microsoft 365 Groups are only available to employees.

Using M365 Groups

M365 groups receive email and have their own calendar. You can access your group email and calendar through Outlook for the web, Outlook for Windows, Outlook for macOS, and Outlook for Mobile. More information about using a Microsoft 365 group in Outlook is .

For group owners

  • . Membership and Ownership changes made to a Microsoft 365 group effect the membership of Teams and SharePoint sites associated with the group, and vice-versa.
  • Deleting a Microsoft 365 group will result in deletion of any Teams or SharePoint sites associated with it.
  • Guests added to a Microsoft 365 group will also be added to the Team and SharePoint site associated with the group, and vice-versa.

Contact your IT support to request a Microsoft 365 Group. They can also help you convert an existing role-based email address.
