Jeanette Funke-Furber has been a strong advocate for improving the knowledge and skill of individuals working with the frail elderly.  Jeanette, a 1962 graduate from the Regina Grey Nuns School of nursing, enrolled in Psychiatric Nursing at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. She then went on to McGill for her BSc in Nursing in 1968 and her MSc in nursing in U. of Colorado Medical Centre in 1972.  Jeanette spent 42 years as a nurse in 5 provinces across Canada in a variety of roles, from small town hospital nurse, psychiatric nursing, home care nurse for the V.O.N., nursing instructor at St. Mary’s Hospital in Montreal, professor at the University of Alberta and instructor and then chair in the Nursing Department, Cariboo College (now Thompson River University) in Kamloops.

In the last 15 years of her career (1985 – 2000) she dedicated her skills and passion to improving the care of the frail elderly as a nursing administrator at the Juan de Fuca Hospitals in Victoria, BC and through an adjunct professor at the University of Victoria School of Nursing.

After retiring in 2000, Jeanette continued to support improving the care of the frail elderly. She co-authored a book with her colleague, Jessie Mantle on the McIver “Restorative Care Model for Older Persons”. She was also the president of the Victoria Eldercare Foundation and remains active on the Foundation's Awards Committee.
