Howie Campbell Men’s Rowing Award

During his 23-year tenure, Campbell captured five Canadian University Championship Titles (1997-98, 1998-99, 2000-01, 2001-02, and 2009-10). The Edmonton, AB native has also coached numerous Canadian boats to international success and was the assistant coach for Team Canada from 1990-96.

In 1994, Campbell led the UVic men’s 8+ to gold at the Commonwealth Championships. A year later, acting as an assistant coach for Canada, he led the Men’s 4-, 4+ and 8+ crews to silver medals at the Pan American Games. That same year Campbell led the Men’s 2- to gold at the American Championships and the 8+ boat to silver.  In 1996, Campbell was appointed as the co-coordinator for World Championship non-Olympic events. From 1986 to 1990, Campbell served as the Provincial Team Coach for Team Saskatchewan.

Campbell is a Level 4 graduate of the National Coaching Institute and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Alberta.

Under Campbell, the Vikes have sent 17 rowers to the Summer Olympics; Campbell himself was a coach at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.  Campbell retired from UVic in the fall of 2013 and has since continued to build on his legacy by leading coaching development in his role as Master Coach for Rowing Canada Aviron.
