Joseph Arvay Social Justice Award

Joe Arvay, OC, OBC, QC was a bold and brilliant advocate, a champion, an influencer, a visionary, a teacher, a trailblazer, a mentor and much more. His unwavering commitment to the pursuit of justice for the most disadvantaged and disenfranchised members of our society has transformed our constitutional landscape.

His legacy includes an unparalleled contribution to the development of Indigenous and equality rights under the Canadian Charter of Right and Freedoms. Joe Arvay’s outstanding accomplishments are widely recognized.

He was the recipient of the Walter S. Tarnopolsky Human Rights Award (2000); the Advocates’ Society’s Award of Justice (2015); the Order of Canada (2017); the Order of British Columbia (2018); an Honorary Doctor of Laws, Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, (2016) and an Honorary Doctor of Laws, University of Victoria (2018).
