Kathy Bakony Scholarship in Art History and Visual Studies

Kathleen (Kathy) Bakony (1960-1922) was born in Dallas, Texas, and moved to Canada at the age of 6. After a short time in Ottawa, she and her parents moved to Victoria in 1967 where her father, Dr. Leo Bakony, would become an economics professor at the University of Victoria and her mother, Sarah, would complete her Bachelor of Arts in sociology there in 1978. Kathy attended Uplands Elementary, Lansdowne Middle School and Mount Douglas Secondary, before completing her Bachelor of Arts in Art History at the University of Victoria as a mature student.

Kathy met Rob Janus in 1989 at the Capital Regional District where they both worked. They married in 1994 and soon moved to Oak Bay where their son, Jack, was born and where they lived the next 27 years together until Kathy’s untimely passing in 2022 from cancer.

Kathy loved her job managing real estate and construction for Coast Capital Savings, where she worked for 30 years. She also enjoyed golf, cooking, art, travel, gardening and hiking while maintaining many close relationships with family and friends.
