Dr. Calvin Mitchell (Mitch) and Linda, his wife, strongly believe in the empowerment that an education provides. Mitch spent eight years at UVic in the Department of Chemistry (1963 to 1971) earning two degrees: a BSc (1967) and a PhD (1971), both in chemsitry. As a result he was able to have a very successful career with the Procter and Gamble Company in Research and Development. Mitch retired from Proctor Gamble in 2002.

Several professors from the 1960s (Wilma Elias, Sandy Kirk, Sid Gibbins, Ken Moss, Fred Fischer, Tikam Jain, Stephen Ryce, Dr. Hutchison, Harry Lynton, Bob O’Brien and especially Frank Robinson) had a major and positive impact on Mitch’s choices and he and Linda felt that they should give something back to the University of Victoria. This generosity has resulted in, but is not limited to, three awards: the Norah and Calvin Banks Indigenous Science Scholarship, the Norah and Calvin Banks Chemsitry Scholarship and the Norah and Calvin Banks Indigenous Leadership Award in the Sciences.

Most importantly Mitch met Linda at UVic.
