Ruth attended Oak Bay High School in Victoria and graduated in 1967. She then attended the University of Victoria in the Faculty of Education, where she specialized in elementary school teaching.

Ruth began her career as a grade one teacher at Willows Elementary School in Victoria. She was truly a natural and gifted teacher, who had a healthy respect for her pupils, parents, peers, administrators, and support staff. Although she was barely five feet tall, she excelled out of the classroom: she coached volleyball and basketball, and even taught jazz dancing to as many as 80 primary students at once.

Ruth taught at Willows until 1977, and then joined the ranks of motherhood. She and her husband John had two children, Alisa and Matthew.

In 1984, Ruth returned to her much-loved teaching and taught in Saanich and Greater Victoria. Unfortunately, Ruth’s return was short-lived because she was diagnosed with leukemia. However, Ruth’s faith was always very strong and she continually maintained an optimistic attitude. Her illness did not stop her from working with children—she even managed to continue directing a children’s church choir.

Two of Ruth’s high school friends, who proceeded to follow her to Willows School as new teachers, will never forget what a remarkable teacher she was. They are still reminded of her when they are incorporating her teaching, coaching, or directing strategies.

By offering this memorial award, we know that Ruth’s spirit will remain in the hearts of many present and future outstanding teachers.
