The scholarship is established in honor of Dr. Crystal Tremblay, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography and Academic Specialist in Community-engaged Research at the University of Victoria.

Crystal holds a PhD from the University of Victoria (2013) and a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the University of British Columbia (2015), where she led Community-based Participatory Research projects in Brazil, Ghana and South Africa working with communities on waste and water governance. She specializes in using participatory video and arts-based methods for community engagement, policy advocacy, capacity building and program evaluation working across the public, private and non-profit sectors.

Strongly rooted in the investigation of innovation in community-based development, she is passionate about cultivating new spaces for creative citizen engagement and the co-creation of knowledge leading to environmental and social equity. Crystal is a founding member of the Salish Sea Hub, a UNESCO Knowledge 4 Change hub for training in Community-based Research and teaches CBPR and Community Mapping with the Geography Map Shop at UVic, supporting student and community-led action projects.

This scholarship exemplifies Crystal’s work and passion for community-driven solutions to some of our most pressing issues—climate, racial and gender equity, decolonization—and towards a more just and sustainable future. The Salish Sea Hub is a partnership with the Victoria Native Friendship Centre, the University of Victoria and the Victoria Foundation with a vision for advancing knowledge democracy through research and training capacity that addresses the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
