Waste pickers in Brazil sort through garbage

UVic Geography professor Dr. Jutta Gutberlet was featured in the Times Colonist on December 27th, 2024 for her work with UVic Geography’s CBRL (Community-based Research Laboratory) and UNICATA (University for and with Waste Pickers).

Gutberlet spoke on the process of establishing a university for waste pickers – or catadores, as they are more commonly known – in Brazil, and her hopes to set up similar establishments in the capital region and beyond.

UNICATA is partnered with the Division of Continuing Studies and several public universities in Brazil, and issues non-credit micro credential certificates to students who complete it’s six educational modules. 211 students successfully completed the program in 2023 and 2024, with class sizes ranging from 15-30 students.
