This is called experiential learning, and it helps you remember more, apply knowledge faster and see the results of your hard work.
Community service learning

Exchange programs

Field schools
Take learning outside the classroom. Field schools provide immersive, practical experiences in locations ranging from local ecosystems to international sites. You'll travel with a small group of students from UVic and other BC post-secondary institutions, working as a team under the guidance of a UVic faculty member and get firsthand insight into your field of study.
Practicums
Work directly with professionals in your discipline. Practicums let you apply your knowledge in real-world settings, whether in education, health, business, or social services, helping prepare you for a smooth transition into your career.

Research opportunities

What is hands-on learning?
Hands-on learning, also called experiential learning, means you actively practice what you learn. Instead of just reading about ideas, you apply them in labs, studios, or fieldwork. It helps you understand concepts faster, remember more, and gain real-world skills.
What does hands-on learning look like at UVic?
It could be coding and testing a software project, conducting field research in marine biology, creating art in a studio, or running experiments in engineering labs. You’ll learn by doing, often in small groups with instructor guidance.
How is is hands-on learning different than traditional classroom learning?
