Board approves new non-remunerated academic appointments policy

October 7, 2024

At their September 24, 2024 meeting, UVic's Board of Governors approved the new Policy on Non-remunerated Academic Appointments, effectively immediately.

The Policy on Non-remunerated Academic Appointments sets out conditions for appointing individuals to non-remunerated academic appointments (e.g., an adjunct, clinical adjunct, affiliate, or honorary appointment).

A central policy ensures academic appointments are managed consistently across the university, including with respect to an appointee’s access to university resources, compliance with university policies and procedures, and term limits. It also provides clarity to prospective appointees and in appointment letters.

Consultations

In developing the policy, the Office of the Vice-President Academic and Provost consulted Deans’ Council and the Vice-President Research and Innovation. UVic faculty, staff and the University of Victoria Faculty Association were invited to provide feedback in 2024.

Strategic relevance

The policy aligns with our Strategic Plan principle of operating with excellence and our priority of partnering for a shared future.

It should be noted that appointments made under this policy do not confer eligibility for appointees to become members of the Faculty Association or any other bargaining unit, except where the appointee is entitled to membership in a bargaining unit under the terms of the relevant collective agreement.
