Sexualized Violence Resource Office

Everyone has the right to live, learn, work and play in an environment free from sexualized violence.

The Sexualized Violence Resource Office (SVRO), located in Equity and Human Rights (EQHR), supports all UVic students, staff and faculty impacted by sexualized violence—whether directly, indirectly or as someone offering support.

The SVRO

SVRO offers a confidential space for anyone to share experiences of sexualized violence without initiating a formal investigation. Under UVic’s policy, a disclosure is distinct from a report—it's an opportunity for survivors or third parties to receive immediate support, information, and options without pressure to proceed. SVRO staff are empathic and help identify options suited to the individual.

Rooted in trauma-informed and survivor-centered approaches, SVRO prioritizes listening with empathy and supporting each person’s choices. They offer individualized coaching and guidance—whether about navigating reporting options, finding counseling or connecting with identity-specific supports. Referrals may include on- and off-campus support options.

  • a voluntary process is a collaborative, restorative route agreed upon by the involved parties and the university. It provides a way to address concerns without resorting to a formal investigation.
  • a report is a written submission made with the intent of initiating an investigation under the Sexualized Violence Prevention and Response Policy.

SVRO leads coordinated prevention efforts, including workshops and awareness campaigns. These initiatives are designed to build a campus culture rooted in consent and respect.

SVRO produces an annual statistical report that tracks both disclosures and reports, as well as engagement in education. This data informs ongoing policy review, risk management and improved support strategies, ensuring the university remains responsive and transparent.

The Policy is periodically refreshed to reflect campus feedback, emerging best practices and legislative requirements. SVRO leads policy reviews—working in collaboration with diverse community stakeholders—to ensure the policy remains robust, inclusive and responsive.
