Bio
Charlotte Schallié is a Professor of Germanic Studies. She is the project lead and co-director, together with Andrea Webb (UBC), of a 7-year SSHRC-funded Partnership Grant entitled “”.
Through her , Charlotte Schallié led an international collaboration to center the expertise and experiences of Holocaust survivors as witnesses, human rights activists, and educators. As part of this work, Dr. Schallié edited the multi-award winning (Toronto: New Jewish Press, 2022). The is also available through the facilitating the book’s use for classroom teaching across Germany. The accompanying exhibition—co-curated by Jakob Hoffmann and Barbara Yelin—was on display at the Stadtmuseum Erlangen, schauraum comic + cartoon in Dortmund, Kunsthaus Wiesbaden, the Ravensbrück Memorial, Erika Fuchs Haus (Schwarzenbach a.d. Saale), and the Bergen-Belsen Memorial.
But I Live is the recipient of the 2022 Canadian Jewish Literary Award (Category: Biography/Memoir), the 2023 Western Canada Jewish Book Award (Kahn Family Foundation Prize for Holocaust category), the 2023 PROSE Award for Biography/Autobiography, and the 2023 PROSE Award for Nonfiction Graphic Novels. It also has been shortlisted for the 2023 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards (Best Realty-Based Work).
Most recently, Charlotte Schallié co-edited, with Alexander Korb, Barbara Yelin’s award-winning graphic novel (Berlin: Reprodukt, 2023). The book has been translated into , and . Emmie Arbel. Die Farbe der Erinnerung is the 2024 recipient of the Gustav-Heinemann-Peace Price for children’s and young adult literature.

Current research projects/ information
Charlotte Schallié is the project lead and co-director of “”, an international and interdisciplinary research project, which is funded by a 7-year SSHRC Partnership Grant ($2.5 mio). In close dialogue and exchange across five research clusters (Holocaust; Iraq/Syria; Rwanda; TurtleIsland; Yugoslav Wars), the Survivor-Centred Visual Narratives research team co-develops arts-based testimony gathering practices that are interconnected yet respect the singular cultural and historical contexts of each research site. The project’s foremost commitment is to the participating survivors who hold unique knowledge not only of the mass atrocity itself, but also of the process of sharing their story.
In 2025, Charlotte Schallié and her team have been awarded Multiculturalism and Anti-Racism Program National Holocaust Remembrance Program funding ($129,769) from Heritage Canada for their project, Developing Trauma-Informed Teaching Resources and Outreach Activities for Arts-Based Survivor Testimonies. Alongside the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and other partners, this project will develop open-access educational resources, learning activities, and an art exhibition to accompany two non-fiction graphic novels by award-winning artist Miriam Libicki: A Kind of Resistance (published in the anthology But I Live, New Jewish Press, 2022) and Two Roses (New Jewish Press, 2026). The project will create innovative evidence-based educational tools to help Canadian high school teachers apply a human rights framework and integrate Holocaust education into the secondary school curriculum.
