Dr. Birna Bjarnadóttir, Research Specialist at the Faculty of Languages and Cultures, University of Iceland, studied modern literature and aesthetics at Freie Universität in Berlin, University of Warwick, and University of Iceland where she completed her PhD in modern Icelandic literature. A former Chair of Icelandic at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg (2003–2015), Birna is a published author on both sides of the Atlantic, (monographs, fiction, translations, book chapters, and essays), and has edited numerous books, including an international collection of essays on the work of the Icelandic writer Guðbergur Bergsson, and bilingual publications of both Icelandic and Icelandic Canadian literature. She leads the University of Iceland’s Research Centre in the Literary and Cultural History of Icelandic Immigrants to North America, is a board member of the University of Iceland’s Vigdís International Centre for Multilingualism and Intercultural Understanding, (UNESCO Cat. 2 Centre), and a board member of the Vigdís International Prize.
